Elgin Courier will scale back publishing to three times per week

The parent company of the Chicago Tribune is shrinking its newspaper in Elgin from daily publication to three times a week.

As of this week, the print edition of the Elgin Courier-News will be published on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays only, a spokeswoman for tronc confirmed Monday. Online publication will continue daily.

Home delivery subscribers will have their subscriptions extended by one month at no additional charge, the spokeswoman said.

The cutback followed layoffs last month of newsroom employees at the Tribune and its suburban publications.

Billed as “the voice of the northern Fox Valley since 1874,” the Courier-News had been owned by Copley Newspapers until it was sold to the Sun-Times News Group in 2000. It was acquired by Tribune Publishing, forerunner of tronc, in 2014.

Tronc also owns the suburban dailies Aurora Beacon-News, Daily Southtown, Naperville Sun, Lake County News-Sun and Northwest Indiana Post-Tribune. Their circulation frequencies are not immediately expected to change.
