Peapod to move headquarters from Skokie to Chicago

Peapod online grocer said it is relocating its headquarters from Skokie to downtown Chicago at 300 S. Riverside Plaza.

The Lake Zurich warehouse and Peapod pick up locations will continue to operate in the suburbs, a company spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The company said about 40 employees who work in a Chicago office at 20 N. Wacker Drive and an unspecified number of corporate employees from the Skokie headquarters at 9933 Woods Drive will move to the new location.

The new headquarters, which has capacity for 275 employees, is expected to be completed in spring 2018. The company said there were no financial incentives that factored into criteria for the move.

"Since Peapod was founded in Chicago in 1989 as the country's first online grocer, we have always considered this city our home, " Peapod acting President Walt Lentz said. "Moving our headquarters downtown will allow us to become a bigger part of the Chicago business community and invest in the city's diverse pool of talent while also growing our business throughout the country."

Peapod offers delivery to both homes and businesses, and has more than 200 pickup locations. Peapod is available in 24 metro markets across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Maryland, District of Columbia and Virginia.

"Over the last 28 years, Peapod has revolutionized the way people across the nation shop for groceries," Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said in a release. "I will continue to work hard to support great companies and make our state an even better place to do business."

With the move Peapod joins other food industry leaders that have relocated to Chicago, including McDonald's, Conagra Brands, ADM, Mead Johnson, Beam Suntory, Kraft Heinz and Oscar Mayer.
