Des Plaines approves plans for new hotel near O'Hare

A new hotel is coming to Des Plaines near O'Hare International Airport.

Aldermen voted unanimously Monday to approve plans by Elgin-based Southern Exposure LP and Pancor Construction and Development to build a 137-room Fairfield Inn & Suites at the intersection of Touhy Avenue and Mannheim Road.

The five-story hotel will be by the LongHorn Steakhouse and Wyndham hotel - formerly the Radisson Hotel - at 1450 E. Touhy Ave.

City council members approved several code variations requested by the developer, including a reduction in the required parking spaces from 469 to 335. Because the developer anticipates many guests will be airport travelers, they will use shuttles or other transportation rather than personal vehicles, officials said.

The operator plans to implement a paid parking system to restrict parking by drivers who aren't customers.

The hotel will be about 64 feet tall, which is 20 feet higher than normally allowed in the commercial district.
