Our endorsement for Suzanne Ness in Illinois House District 66

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

Suzanne Ness is wrapping up her first term as the legislator from House District 66, and it's been a relatively active two years for the Democrat from Crystal Lake. She was the first chief co-sponsor of legislation that allows young people with disabilities to remain in high school until the end of the school year in which they turn 22, instead of being kicked out on their 22nd birthday - a very important distinction for families.

That was one of four bills Ness got passed since joining the legislature in January 2021.

We're not surprised by her success: When Ness was a minority member of the McHenry County Board (while living in Crystal Lake), she contributed to the crafting of new ethics guidelines for the board, worked on protecting the region's water supply and more.

Ness is fully conversational on the current issues before the legislature. She supported capping legislative leader terms at 10 years, wants to expand vote by mail in Illinois by calling for more ballot drop-off locations and has been a strong advocate for women, the environment, the LGBTQ+ population and education, among other issues. Her website claims she has brought more than $3 million back to her district.

Her opponent is Republican Connie Cain of Gilberts, a CPA and a precinct committeewoman in Dundee Township, who has campaigned hard through a tough primary race and in the general election. She speaks like someone who could be willing to compromise in order to get things done.

Still, Ness has already shown she's up to the task in Springfield. She is enthusiastically endorsed for reelection.
