Esther's Friends is opening registration on Aug. 15 for the virtual Fancy Prance 5K. Participants can enter their times Sept. 15-20.

The charity is named in honor of Esther Viola Frey, a child with trichothiodystrophy, a rare genetic disease.

The virtual 5K run is inspired by Esther's love of being fancy and having fun. So wear something fancy and fun and remember Esther, who died in June 2020 at age 2, while raising funds to help all of Esther's inpatient friends!

While they have categories for the entire family (and even a stroller division), the 5K distance is especially meaningful as that is about the distance from Esther's house in Lincoln Park to Lurie Children's Hospital, where Esther met with her specialists and stayed during her hospitalizations.

Join the Fancy Prance with Esther's parents, Tim (who grew up in Arlington Heights) and Monica Frey, and her brother Billy.

Other distances include a 1-mile walk and a kid dash. Everyone can get in on the fun -- whether you choose to run with a necklace, glowstick, tutu, superhero cape, headband, nail polish -- whatever is that one little extra thing that makes you smile and feel happy.
