Letter: NASCAR deal is no victory for Chicago

The announcement that Chicago has made a deal to host NASCAR races has set the stage for one of the metropolitan area's biggest sports fiascos. At a time when it is of paramount importance to curtail fuel consumption and environmentally-unfriendly emissions to combat the climate change crisis, gas-guzzling cars will be spewing pollution as they race up and down the streets.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot predicts that the deal will "introduce a whole new fan base," while Black driver Bubba Wallace suggests it might inspire a 9-year-old in the stands to say to himself "I can do this."

Heaven forbid.

Drag racing already is a serious problem. What will happen when hundreds of Bubba Wallace wannabes decide to start practicing to be NASCAR drivers and put the pedal to the metal on our streets and highways?

That old cliché "you ain't seen nuthin' yet" applies here.
