Letter: Climate leadership distinguishes Casten

The current heat wave we are experiencing is a reminder of something we would all like to forget - we are facing a future climate of extreme heat, with resulting drought, forest fires and flooding from rising sea levels and intense storms. The scope of this impending disaster will make those things we now prefer to worry about day-to-day seem trivial.

There are actions we can and must take, but we need leaders who will stay focused on this issue between heat waves. U.S. Rep. Sean Casten, who is fighting to retain his seat in the 6th District, has devoted his life to fight climate change. Before serving in Congress he worked in the renewable energy industry and as a member of Congress has been perhaps the foremost expert on climate change, sponsoring successful climate legislation and serving on the House special committee on the climate crisis.

Unfortunately he faces a primary challenge, even before the challenge in the general election.

There are many reasons to vote for Sean Casten, including his stances on issues such as gun safety, racial justice, health care, voting rights, education and more. But it is his voice on the climate crisis that makes him both unique and irreplaceable.

Tuesday's vote in the 6th District promises to be close. We need Sean Casten in Congress, and he needs our support to make that happen.
