Endorsement: Cunningham for Kane County clerk

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

In the race for Kane County Clerk, longtime incumbent John "Jack" Cunningham faces challenger Douglas B. Warlick.

Cunningham is running for his sixth term as clerk after previously saying his current fifth term would be his last. The 83-year-old of Aurora says "there are a few things I would like to finish," such as securing new voting equipment and making the office's functions more transparent.

Warlick, 65, of Geneva, a longtime attorney, says the clerk's office needs fresh ideas and new technology to move forward. He advocates for term limits of no more than two terms and talks of preserving election integrity, accountability and transparency. He has no prior experience in public office, but is eager to serve.

Cunningham's depth of knowledge of the office and his unblemished track record are assets we can't ignore.

Cunningham is endorsed.

The winner will face Democrat Nicolas Jimenez in the Nov. 8 general election for county clerk.

Jimenez, a quality assurance manager from Elburn, lost to Cunningham in 2018.
