Endorsement: Krause, Murphy for DuPage forest board

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

Four candidates are squaring off in Republican primaries for DuPage Forest Preserve Board District 2 and District 6.

Don Krause and Kelli May are running in District 2. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Tina Tyson-Dunne in the general election.

In District 6, Louis Addante is challenging incumbent Al Murphy. Democrat Erik Spande will face the winner in November.

May, a Villa Park resident and District 45 school board member, would like to see the forest preserve district focus more on educating residents about conservation, preservation and sustainability.

Krause, a Lisle resident, was inspired to run after he learned the board issued a $41.5 million bond without asking voters in a referendum.

Both candidates would like to see more transparency from the board when it comes to spending and budgeting.

Krause is endorsed.

Murphy, a West Chicago resident first elected to the board in 2014, wants to see the district continue to restore land, establish a reforestion policy and continue work to connect trails throughout the county.

Addante, a Wheaton resident who has been a forest preserve police officer for 27 years, is running because he would like to continue serving the public after he retires later this year. His biggest priority would be ensuring that facilities and trails are well-maintained and accessible to all.

He would like to see the district establish a kids-only fishing lake at Blackwell Forest Preseve, too.

Murphy has earned the right to continue to serve District 6 residents and is endorsed.

We hope that Addante continues to look for ways to serve the forest preserve, too.
