Deputy announces challenge to Lake County sheriff

Lake County sheriff's Deputy William "Chris" King on Monday announced he will challenge his boss in the June 28 Democratic primary.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg is running for a second term.

A lifelong Lake County resident, King has 17 years of experience in law enforcement and also is a school board member for the Zion-Benton Township High School District, according to a news release.

King has worked as a patrol officer, a criminal investigator, a school resource officer and a special weapons and tactics team member, the release said.

He coached the Zion Jr. Zee Bees Pewee football teams for six years and served as assistant track and field coach at Waukegan Township High School and head track and field coach at North Chicago High School, according to the release.

Idleburg defeated three-term incumbent Mark Curran in the November 2018 general election by 137 votes out of 245,000 cast.
