GCG Financial's Deerfield office held its second virtual "5K My Way" to raise funds for the Max Schewitz Foundation. The event allowed participants to complete the 5K run/walk on their own time.

With 63 participants, GCG managed to raise $3,150 for the Max Schewitz Foundation, which supports education, prevention and research of sudden cardiac death in young adults.

The foundation's HeartSmart EKG program provides a low-cost cardiac screening program to area high schools to detect hidden heart conditions. GCG Financial has supported the Max Schewitz Foundation over several years financially, but has also provided volunteers for numerous screenings through their Generous Community Giving Program.

"We are proud of all our runners and walkers that participated in this year's 5K to raise money for this important cause," a GCG representative said. "Even though we are still navigating a virtual world during the pandemic, we are thankful that our team can still come together each year to support our local communities."

Based in Buffalo Grove, the Max Schewitz Foundation's dual mission reflects Max's life and death. His parents and family friends started the foundation in 2006 after 20-year-old Max died suddenly from a cardiac arrhythmia.

The Max Schewitz Foundation works to prevent sudden cardiac death in young adults through HeartSmart EKG and also to promote conservation of fragile reptile species and their ecosystems.

To date, almost 100,000 students in Illinois and Wisconsin have received EKG testing from the foundation, and 2,645 students were given free limited echocardiograms. The foundation has found 952 adults who required further medical evaluation.
