Lake County man charged with punching, pushing sheriff's deputies

A man from an unincorporated area near Libertyville was held on $20,000 bail Friday on charges he punched and pushed Lake County sheriff's deputies.

Christian Castro, 33, is charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Probation is also an option. Castro also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

Lake County sheriff's deputies received a call about 1:45 a.m. Friday about a possible domestic battery in progress inside a business on the 14000 block of West Petronella Drive. The caller indicated a man might have been preventing a woman from using her phone, according to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Castro, who authorities say was living at the business, became aggressive with the deputies who arrived to check on the woman, according to Covelli. While being detained, Castro punched one of the deputies in the face, breaking the deputy's glasses and causing a cut to the deputy's face, Covelli said. Castro continued pushing the deputies before they were able to restrain him, Covelli said.

The woman and an infant were unhurt, Covelli said, adding that the investigation revealed Castro broke her phone and refused to allow her to leave.

Castro's next court date is Jan. 13.
