Beyond the Byline: Arriving in the suburbs just in time for a pandemic

As he was set to graduate from college, Trey Arline could have no idea that anything close to the COVID-19 pandemic was going to impact life for him going forward.

Arline moved to Chicago from Las Vegas in 2020, setting foot in Illinois for the first time when the entire world basically stopped.

Born in Georgia to an Air Force family, he has lived in Germany, Portugal, New Mexico and many more places in his childhood before settling in Las Vegas for seven years.

An interest in the news and writing consumed him at an early age, watching CNN worldwide and learning about different cultures and perspectives. He began his journey through higher education at community college through the College of Southern Nevada, then graduated in 2020 from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a bachelor's degree in journalism and media studies.

Over his time as a reporter, Trey has done work with his student newspaper, The Scarlet and Gray Free Press, and covered both the 2018 midterms and the 2020 presidential election. He has done stringer work for The Associated Press and NBC News, as well. My first professional internship was with The Nevada Independent.

He joined the Daily Herald just as the world was going into quarantine because of the pandemic and all staff members were required to work remotely. He writes for the newspaper through an agreement with the nonprofit Report for America, which aims to revitalize local news journalism with coverage of underreported areas. His efforts are concentrated on issues in Roselle, Bloomingdale, Itasca and Wood Dale in DuPage County, and he covers matters related to the Round Lake area in Lake County, as well.

When he's not making various phone calls a day, you can find him playing video games, watching the English Premier League on Netflix or Hulu or finding new restaurants around the Chicago area to contribute to his "Quarantine Fifteen."
