Authorities: 2 dead in small plan crash in central Indiana

DARLINGTON, Ind. (AP) - A single-engine plane that left an Indianapolis flight school crashed Sunday morning in a central Indiana field, killing both people on board, according to Indiana State Police.

The plane crashed outside small community of Darlington before 10:30 a.m., according to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Tammy Jones. She said the plane left the Lift Academy in Indianapolis, roughly 50 miles (80.47 kilometers) away, before 10 a.m. Darlington's population is about 860.

Both people on board were pronounced dead at the scene, said Indiana State Police Sergeant Jeremy Piers. He said the names would not be released publicly until family members were notified.

The Montgomery County sheriff's office said in a Facebook post that an intersection outside of Darlington was closed because of an accident and would remain so for 'œan extended amount of time'ť during the investigation. The office didn't immediately have further details.

'œWe are heartbroken by this tragic accident and the loss of our team members," Lift Academy spokesman Jon Austin said in an email.

He did not have further details about who was on board the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that an agency investigator was responding to the scene.
