Endorsement: Singh for Palatine Library trustee

On April 6, voters will elect five trustees to the seven-member Palatine Library Board.

Four of them - all incumbents seeking reelection - are assured of victory. Debby Bauer, Bruce Jefferson, Jeffrey Westhoff and current library board President Andrea Vanderhoek are running unopposed for four 4-year terms.

But one seat is still to be decided.

Incumbent Preet Singh, appointed to the board to fill a vacancy 17 months ago, is competing for a 2-year term with Maureen DeRosa, a board member of the charitable Palatine Library Foundation that supports the library.

We like DeRosa. She is earnest and knowledgeable, and her background as a retired marketing executive would be an asset to the library. Beyond the library foundation, her civic involvement also includes being a board member with the local League of Women Voters.

That said, we can find no reason to withhold an endorsement from Singh.

He is committed to extending library services to those who may not have easy access to them and his background as a teacher with multilingual skills is a great strength.

He has gained important board experience over the past year and a half, and that should serve to increase the contributions he can make to the library in the next two years.

Our endorsement goes to Singh. Our good wishes go not only to him, but also to DeRosa for the services she already is making to the community.
