Indiana Sen. Todd Young announces 2022 reelection campaign

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Todd Young has announced that he's seeking reelection to his Indiana seat.

Young's bid for a second term in the 2022 election was widely anticipated and he announced his intentions in a video posted online Tuesday.

Young touted his support of former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence and pointed to his support of Trump's conservative judicial nominees and Trump's push to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

'œI believe I've lived up to my oath and kept my word, but more work remains,'ť Young said.

Young was a southern Indiana congressman for six years before winning the Senate seat in 2016 over former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh.

Young's campaign reported ending last year with nearly $2.4 million in the bank. No Republicans have made public moves to challenging him for the GOP nomination. Gary Human Relations Commission Executive Director Haneefah Khaaliq is the only Democrat who has announced plans to enter the 2022 campaign.

The state Democratic Party called Young a 'œyes man'ť for Republican leaders and said he shouldn't be trusted because of his vote to acquit Trump of impeachment charges in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
