Geneva considers ticketing people, businesses over governor's COVID-19 orders
People who violate the governor's public health and safety orders in Geneva could receive local tickets, under a proposal the Geneva City Council is considering.
Aldermen will discuss the regulation at a special committee-of-the-whole meeting at 7 p.m. Monday night.
They are being asked to add a provision to the city code that says people, businesses and groups who violate the governor's executive orders could be ticketed by city authorities.
The first offense would be a $100 ticket; a second violation, $200; and third and subsequent violations, $500 apiece.
Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns could not be immediately reached for comment late Friday afternoon, when the meeting was announced.
Several restaurants in Geneva have made a point of continuing to offer indoor dining, despite Gov. J.B. Pritzker's Oct. 23 ban on doing so.
One of them, FoxFire Restaurant, has sued the governor and the state and Kane County health departments, over the matter.
