Arrest made in drive-by shooting that killed girl at party
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Authorities announced an arrest Friday in the drive-by shooting of a 7-year-old girl who was killed while attending a birthday party in South Bend.
Chrisyah Stephens apparently was the victim of a shooting in August that was aimed at someone else, police said.
St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter said he met with Chrisyah's parents before talking to reporters.
'œThere was a lot of crying,'ť Cotter said. 'œBoth on their part and on our part.'ť
Jaheim Campbell, 18, was being held in the county jail on charges of murder and attempted murder, Cotter said.
He is scheduled to appear in court Monday. It wasn't immediately known if he has a lawyer who could comment.
When Campbell was informed that he had shot a child, according to police, he responded with a private social media message: 'œI told everyone this is not a joke and I'm not satisfied yet.'ť
Cotter thanked police and the public.
Commander Mike Grezgorek, head of a county homicide unit, 'œcommented that he had not been associated with a case that has had more outpouring of support from the community and more tips from members of the community,'ť Cotter said.
