Endorsement: Babette Holder Youngberg for DuPage County recorder of deeds
With Fred Bucholz retiring, DuPage County voters will pick a new recorder of deeds for the first time in 16 years. And no matter whom they choose, there will be a transition period.
Two newcomers - Republican Babette Holder Youngberg of Wheaton and Democrat Kathleen Carrier of Carol Stream - are seeking to replace Bucholz. Neither has the experience and expertise Bucholz had in 2004 when he was first elected to replace his former boss.
Both candidates acknowledge they're outsiders who will need time to become familiar with the office, which is the custodian of all the county's land records.
Youngberg, a social media manager with experience in real estate and property management, says she would use her communication skills to help educate the public about services the recorder's office provides.
Carrier, who had a 15-year career in the residential building industry, said she would ensure safeguards are in place to protect the office from cyberattacks.
But when it comes to suggesting specific improvements to the operation, both candidates said they can't do that until after they are elected and get to know the office and its staff.
The one thing Youngberg has in her favor is the support of Bucholz, who has backed her campaign. He could help her learn the job.
Youngberg is endorsed.
