Endorsement: Sandy Wegman for Kane County recorder of deeds

The race for Kane County recorder of deeds offers voters a rematch from the 2012 election, when longtime Republican incumbent Sandy Wegman - now wrapping up her fifth term in office - defeated Democratic challenger Brenda Rodgers.

The recorder's office - primarily responsible for maintaining public records and documents relating to real estate - largely has flown under the radar during Wegman's tenure, a source for some criticism from Rodgers. But we view this as more of a positive reflection on Wegman's steady and efficient leadership. Just by the nature of the office, if a recorder is making headlines, it's probably not good news.

Besides an established record of effectiveness, Wegman, of Elgin, also has shown a commitment to transparency and public access, making her office's records publicly available online at no cost. Kane was first among the collar counties to do this.

Rodgers, a real estate agent and former Elgin City Council member, says if elected she will take steps to make the office more relevant to Kane County residents, with events teaching homeowners how to avoid foreclosure, more documents available in Spanish language and more payments allowed electronically. These are good suggestions, and we urge Wegman, if reelected, to consider them.

Despite Rodgers' solid proposals, Wegman holds a clear edge in experience and a proven ability to successfully manage the office. We endorse Wegman.
