Endorsement: Michelle Mussman for House Dist. 56

For the 10 years State Rep. Michelle Mussman of Schaumburg has been in the Illinois General Assembly, no one could accuse her of neglecting her constituency. When an event's taken place in House District 56, she's usually been there.

We always found her likable and committed but weren't as convinced of her effectiveness in Springfield.

But we're impressed by her growth. She seems to have gained perspective along with her experience, and she isn't afraid of taking some unconventional positions - including, for instance, looking at term limits and the ability for voters to recall elected officials, ideas that most Democrats don't come near.

In this election, she's running against Schaumburg Township Highway Commissioner Scott Kegarise, whose involvement in the community has been long and extensive. In addition to his work with the township, he's headed up both the Schaumburg Athletic Assocation and the Schaumburg Jaycees.

A conservative Republican with a focus on cutting taxes and public pension reform, Kegarise is tough and worthy competition for Mussman and this looks to be a close race between two good candidates.

We like Mussman's commitment to education and encourage her to follow through on her pledge toward fiscal control and budget reform.

Our endorsement goes to Mussman in Illinois House District 56, which takes in parts of Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Roselle, and Schaumburg.
