Libertyville High alum found dead at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A University of Nebraska-Lincoln student found dead Friday at a fraternity house there was a Libertyville High School alumnus from Green Oaks.

Luke Weiland, 20, was discovered unresponsive in his room by fellow Delta Tau Delta fraternity members who had become concerned after not hearing from him, university police Capt. John Backer said. He'd last been seen alive Thursday night.

The other students unsuccessfully tried to resuccitate Weiland, Backer said.

An autopsy revealed Weiland had choked to death on his vomit, likely while unconscious, Backer said. While Weiland's death is under investigation, police don't believe alcohol played a role and they're looking into whether a medical issue could have contributed, Backer said, among other factors.

There was no evidence of a struggle, Backer said.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Weiland was a junior studying business administration and management. He been staying at the fraternity house this summer while working in Nebraska.

Leslie B. Reed, the public affairs director for the university, said it's not uncommon for a few students to live in fraternity houses over the summer.

“We're saddened by the death of this student and offer our sympathies to his family and friends,” Reed said.

Weiland was a multi-sport athlete at Libertyville High. He played basketball as a freshman, ran track as a sophomore and played football all four years, a school spokeswoman said.
