Man surrenders, ending standoff with Aurora police

A man who barricaded himself inside an Aurora home on the 500 block of Bangs Street peacefully surrendered Wednesday morning after talking with the police department's Crisis Negotiation Team for 40 minutes by phone, authorities said.

Police responded to the area about 2 a.m. for a report of a man shooting at another man in the street. The caller later told police the man with the gun was using a gun to break out windows of a vehicle parked in the driveway.

Police evacuated several homes on Bangs Street on the city's near southeast side and urged other residents in the area to stay inside until the situation was resolved.

Responding officers received information there could be multiple people in the home besides the suspect, along with multiple guns. The suspect had made threats of suicide by cop over the past month, officers were told.

The Crisis Negotiation Team and Aurora Police's Special Response Team were requested at approximately 2:45 a.m.

After officers determined there was only one other person inside the house with the suspect, announcements were made for them to come outside. A woman walked out of the home uninjured at 4:15 a.m.

Police for nearly five hours tried unsuccessfully to make contact with the man, who had turned off his cellphone.

They were finally able to speak to him on the telephone just before 9.a.m. An APD Crisis Negotiator convinced the man to surrender peacefully shortly thereafter.

"This was a scenario that might have had a very different outcome but for the response of our officers, negotiators and Special Response Team members," Aurora Chief Kristen Ziman said. "Their training and, ultimately, their patience, brought this incident to a peaceful resolution."

Aurora detectives obtained a search warrant. Detectives and evidence technicians searched the home to identify and collect forensic evidence for the investigation, which remains ongoing.
