Open burning ban likely in Lake County

A recommendation to temporarily ban open burning in unincorporated areas is expected to be approved next week by the Lake County Board. The board's public works, planning and transportation committee on Wednesday recommended approval of the measure, which is similar to those already enacted by several fire protection districts. Officials say smoke from burning landscape waste can worsen respiratory conditions that make people susceptible to the coronavirus. Landscape waste is defined as shrubbery cuttings, grass clippings, leaves, or other non-woody materials. Recreational fires, including fire pits that don't contain garbage, junk and debris, tree trunks or landscape waste will be allowed. The measure would go into effect immediately on county board approval May 12 and expire June 10. Information to educate residents on the temporary measure will be forthcoming.
