District 220 board approves flooring project spurred by school PTO's donation

Barrington Area Unit District 220 board members Tuesday night approved a six-figure flooring project for a grade school as a result of a commitment from the building's Parent Teacher Organization to pay half the cost.

About $60,000 will be donated by the PTO at Hough Street Elementary School in Barrington toward the flooring project. District 220 will pay the other 50% for the building's new interior surface.

District 220 board members approved the project in a videoconference meeting. Board member Barry Altshuler said the work at Hough Street Elementary will be budgeted separately from the rest of the district's summer projects.

"The reason we took it on this summer is because the PTO of Hough has offered to pay 50% of the cost of the floor remodel," Altshuler said during Tuesday's session, "and as a result we decided it was too good to pass that up, and we have money still in the existing (operations and maintenance) budget that we're going to use."

Addison-based Consolidated Flooring of Chicago submitted a revised proposal to District 220 showing the work should cost $121,449

In part, vinyl tile will replace Hough Street Elementary's classroom carpeting. Other interior surfaces will be replaced as well in the project covering common areas, corridors, resource and support rooms, library and the classrooms.

District 220 Assistant Superintendent of Business Services David Bein complimented the Hough PTO for the financial commitment.

Similar to other organizations, the Hough PTO is a privately funded, nonprofit operation that hosts fundraisers such as book fairs and gift wrappings to buy equipment for children and instructors.

"I would really like to thank the PTO at the school for their support and commitment to the school and the district," Bein said, "and their generosity and the entire Hough community for supporting this and making it possible for us to be able to do this. So, thank you to the Hough Street families and community."
