Number of inmate coronavirus cases up to 17 at Cook County jail

A growing number of inmates and staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Cook County jail, officials said.

The Cook County sheriff's office said in a statement that a total of 50 detainees at the jail have been tested for COVID-19 after exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, 17 inmates have tested positive. Meanwhile, two detainees have tested negative, and 31 have pending test results.

In addition, four correctional staff and one sheriff's police officer have tested positive.

Staff members at the jail's Cermak Hospital "are closely monitoring the detainees on the living units where these individuals were housed, and will test any detainees who are symptomatic," officials said.
