Beach Park men identified as victims in deadly high-speed crash

Lake County authorities on Wednesday identified two Beach Park men as the victims of a deadly high-speed crash Sunday morning in northern Newport Township.

Angel Calderon, 23, and Miguel Mandujano, 27, died as a result of blunt force injuries suffered in the one-vehicle crash, according to preliminary autopsy results released by the Lake County coroner's office.

Toxicology results are pending, and the crash remains under investigation by the coroner's office and the Lake County sheriff's office Technical Crash Investigations Unit, Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said.

Lake County sheriff's police say the crash occurred about 6:45 a.m. Sunday at West Russell Road and Delany Road, just south of the Wisconsin border.

Authorities said Calderon was driving a 2006 Infiniti sedan north on Delaney with Mandujano as his passenger when the vehicle approached a dead-end at Russell. Calderon failed to slow down and instead drove off the road, struck an embankment and went airborne for about 200 feet. The car soared over Russell Road before crashing to the ground, sheriff's police said.

Excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff's office.
