2nd man arrested in Feb. 2 shooting of Chicago firefighter

CHICAGO (AP) - A second man has been arrested in the shooting of a Chicago firefighter who police believe got caught in crossfire while responding to a car fire.

Jermaine White, 29, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm following his Monday arrest in south suburban Lansing.

Chicago police said Tuesday that White was identified as the person who shot the firefighter in the left leg Feb. 2 as he and other firefighters were working to put out a car fire. The 36-year-old firefighter is expected to make a full recovery, officials said.

Police believe the firefighter was not targeted but got caught in an exchange of gunfire between two groups after the car was set on fire. The firefighter was hit in his left leg during that exchange.

Another man, 29-year-old Hollis Williams, was arrested Feb. 6 in the shooting and charged with one count each of aggravated battery of a firefighter and aggravated battery of a police officer and two weapons charges.

It's not clear if White has an attorney. He was scheduled to appear Wednesday for a bond hearing.
