Suburban Chicago man dies after pit bull attack

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (AP) -

A suburban Chicago man who was one of four people mauled by a pit bull over the weekend has died, authorities said Tuesday.

Police in Plainfield said they were called to a residence Saturday night after a family's pet pit bull attacked four people, including 25-year-old Devin White. The Chicago Tribune reported that White, who lived at another address in Plainfield, was taken to Amita St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with severe injuries, before he was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

On Monday night, White was pronounced dead at Loyola, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death but in a statement, Plainfield Police Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said on Tuesday that White died as a result of injuries sustained due to the dog bite."

Police said that three other people who were bitten - a 52-year-old woman, 25-year-old woman and 19-year-old man - were treated at an area hospital before they were released.

The investigation was continuing but police said the family that owned the dog said it hadn't been provoked before it attacked.
