A Facebook post leads to suspect in Round Lake-area burglaries

A man who lives near Round Lake was charged Wednesday with burglary and theft for stealing tools and then trying to sell them on Facebook Marketplace, authorities said.

Michael J. Schuerr, 39, of the 35300 block of North Nielsen Drive, faces two counts of felony burglary and three counts of felony theft, according to a news release by the Lake County sheriff's office Thursday.

On Wednesday, a Gurnee man who'd seen the post about the tools drove to Schuerr's home but had trouble finding it. The Gurnee man asked one of Schuerr's neighbors if he knew where Schuerr lived and told the man he was there to buy tools.

The neighbor, who'd recently had tools stolen in a burglary, said he would walk to Schuerr's place with the Gurnee man. When the two arrived, Schuerr opened his garage door and the neighbor saw his stolen toolbox and tools, according to the news release.

The neighbor confronted Schuerr, who immediately closed his garage door and fled from the home, according to police. The neighbor and another person police described as a good Samaritan chased Schuerr down and detained him until sheriff's deputies arrived.

Sheriff's deputies obtained a search warrant for Schuerr's residence because he was a suspect in other burglaries and recovered property stolen from other area residents, according to the news release.

A Lake County judge set bail for Schuerr at $35,000, which means he'll need to post $3,500 to leave jail.

Schuerr is next due in court on Feb. 13.
