Kane County sex assault suspect arrested in New York

A 40-year-old former Kane County man wanted for a 2018 sexual assault was apprehended in New York late last week.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain's office announced the arrest of Samuel Helland after a U.S. Marshal's Task Force investigation into the case.

Authorities said Helland met a woman through an internet dating service in July 2018 and invited her to his home on the 6N900 block of Jackson Avenue near St. Charles in unincorporated Kane County.

The woman said she was sexually assaulted by Helland while she was in the home.

She reported the attack after leaving Helland's home and going a nearby hospital for treatment.

While the investigation was underway, Helland left the area and ultimately an arrest warrant was issued, officials in Hain's office said.

A Kane County sheriff's deputy was assigned to the marshal's task force in an attempt to track down Helland and other fugitives.

Helland was located in New York and arrested Thursday.

He is awaiting extradition back to Kane County to stand trial.
