Lake Zurich High School Produces Edgy Adaptation of Greek Tragedy

Lake Zurich High School Theatre has begun work on The Foul Mess in Thebes; an edgy and fast paced Greek tragedy that challenges the status quo and sheds new light on the idea of community. The play is part of a larger work by Sean Graney titled All My Tragic. It was written in 2013 and premiered in 2014, with another remount of the production in 2015. Graney is a Chicago based theatre artist who founded the theatre company The Hypocrites. He originally wrote and produced All Our Tragic as a 12 hour show, 11 am to 11 pm. This involved modernizing and shortening all 32 Ancient Greek tragedies. The play was given its name to parody the soap opera All My Children, as well as a reference to the distillation of the entire Greek tragedies in existence.

LZHS Theatre is making Graney's work more accessible by premiering only a portion of this large undertaking. The six plays that will be modernized and condensed on the LZHS stage are Aeschylus' The Seven Against Thebes; Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, Oedipus in Colonus, Antigone; Euripides' The Bacchae, and The Phoenician Women. On February 6th, 7th, and 8th at 7:00 pm The Foul Mess in Thebes will be performed at Lake Zurich High School Performing Arts Center; located at 300 Church Street, Lake Zurich, Illinois 60047. Tickets can be purchased at www.lz95.org/PAC. Tickets cost $9.00/student or senior, $11.00/adult, and $35.00/person for the dinner and show ticket. In order to foster a sense of community prior to the performance, cast members will eat dinner each night with audience members who have purchased a dinner and show ticket.

The lead characters will be played by Luke Jalove, Sammie Kopp, Hayden Shaw, Olivia Hodge, Bella Beginini, Teresa Davis, Nolan Bertrand, Ryan Jones, Alex Ketcham, Connor O'Malley, Matty Winiarz, and Josh Jaffe. The show also features a small folk band played by Adrianna Franzen-Moreno, Kaleigh Hesiterkamp, Alina Malin, David Franzen Moreno, and Jora Pugliese. Appearing as a supporting role, fighter, or understudy are McKenna Kalesz, Cassidy Kalamaras, Cason Schingoethe, Brittany Rogus, Annie Gross, William Chiladikas, Matthew Shaw, and Liam Mulroe. The student leadership team consists of Haley Cranstoun, Iman Beg, Emily Robins, and Morgan Marguerite.
