Suspect charged in Elmhurst burglaries

A Chicago woman has been charged with burglarizing several Elmhurst residences - including at least two in which the homeowners were either in the house or outside doing yard work.

Deon Hampton, 28, of the 6000 block of South Damen, is charged with residential burglary and being held on $100,000 bail at the DuPage County jail. She currently is on parole for residential burglary in Cook County.

Because of her criminal history, Hampton is eligible for a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison if convicted, authorities said.

Authorities say Hampton burglarized multiple homes from Tuesday through Thursday. Elmhurst police said they arrested her Thursday when they found her sitting in a vehicle in Bensenville.

"The allegations that, during a three-day span, Deon Hampton entered multiple residences, at least two of which were occupied at the time, and stole valuables are unacceptable and will be met with the full force and effect of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. "In addition to allegedly stealing valuables from his victims, Deon Hampton's actions also victimized the entire community, robbing residents of the feeling of safety and security that their home provides."

Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth said residents provided police with private video surveillance that helped lead to the arrest.

"The apprehension of the suspect is a perfect example of the partnership that exists between the community and police working together to keep our neighborhoods safe," he said.

Hampton's arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 25 in front of Judge Jeffrey Mackay.
