Batavia farmers market perfect for every season

The Batavia Farmers Market serves up fresh produce and products all year long. From June through the end of October, you can meander through the outdoor market in downtown Batavia on North River Street between Wilson and State streets. Once the chill sets in, follow the market to Bar Evolution for your grocery needs from November to May.

The market is primarily a producers' market, meaning the majority of commodities sold are made or grown by local food and beverage producers. The Batavia Farmers Market features an average of 30 vendors every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, selling products including fruit, vegetables, soaps, cheese, eggs, ginger beer, coffee and hot sauces among others. Most weeks, visitors can enjoy live music while they shop; kid-friendly activities make it a great place to take the whole family.

The coordinator of the Batavia Farmers Market, Abby Beck, has loved spending her Saturdays at the market since one of her neighbors started it when Beck was a child.

"I just love the farmers market," said Beck. "It's been wonderful to see it grow over the years."

Gerald Subaru of North Aurora is a presenting sponsor for the Batavia Farmers Market. Gerald staffs a booth every week and shows off a new car for attendees to check out.

The market gives Batavia community members a chance to meet their local farmers and understand where their food is coming from, something Beck has noticed becoming increasingly important to shoppers. The Batavia Farmers Market also participates in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), giving those who need help purchasing food access to fresh and healthy ingredients.

Batavia MainStreet and local businesses help make the market possible. Gerald Subaru of North Aurora is a presenting sponsor and visitors can often stop by their booth or check out one of their cars parked at the market each week.

"People should come throughout the year," said Beck. "It's a great way to get to know your farmers and community."
