Indiana court upholds sentence in 1994 double-slaying case

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indiana man who fatally shot his mother and stepfather as a youth has lost his latest bid for a sentence reduction.

Aaron Brown was 16 when he killed his mother, Elizabeth Ann Grueb, and stepfather, Jeffrey E. Grueb, at their DeKalb County home in 1994. He was sentenced to 100 years in prison in December 1994 after pleading guilty to two counts of murder.

Brown's request for post-conviction relief argued that his 100-year sentence was a "de facto life sentence" and his juvenile status wasn't considered.

But The (Auburn) Star reports that Indiana's Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a DeKalb County judge's 2018 ruling against Brown's request.

Prosecutors argued Brown doesn't face a life sentence because he could be released as early as age 62, in 2040.
