1st Round. c. A first-round singles victory at Flushing Meadows guarantees a player $100,000 this year; prize money is $163,000 for reaching the third round, $280,000 for fourth, $500,000 for quarterfinals, $960,000 for semifinals and $1.9 million for a runner-up.

2nd Round. b. Serena Williams not only holds the tournament mark of 70 - her total in 1999, when she won her first of six U.S. Open titles - but also ranks second (with 67 last year), third (65 in 2016), fourth (63 in 2012) and fifth (61 in 2002). She also shares, with older sister Venus, the record for most aces in a U.S. Open women's singles match (18).

3rd Round. c. Karlovic, a 6-foot-11 (2.11-meter) Croatian, delivered 61 aces in a 2016 five-set victory over Yen-hsun Lu in the first round. Sampras holds the record for most aces in the tournament in a single year, with 144 while winning the 2002 championship in what turned out to be the final event of his career.

4th Round. a. Bob Bryan has won five men's doubles titles at Flushing Meadows with his twin brother Mike, plus four mixed doubles trophies, for a total of nine. The professional era's overall mark of 16 is held by Martina Navratilova, whose total includes four in singles, nine in women's doubles and three in mixed doubles - including with Bob Bryan in 2006.

Quarterfinal. b. It's happened at Wimbledon each of the past two years - and nowhere else. In 2018, John Isner (33), Kevin Anderson (32), Rafael Nadal (32) and Novak Djokovic (31) reached the semifinals at the All England Club.
