Police: Carpentersville woman bit, kicked officers during arrest
A 25-year-old woman has been charged with biting and kicking four police officers after an arrest early Tuesday in Carpentersville that was prompted by a loud music complaint.
Lakendra A. Shelly, of the 0-99 block of Oakcrest Drive, faces four felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, according to Kane County court records.
Police Chief Michael Kilbourne said officers were called at 12:34 a.m. to an apartment complex parking lot for a complaint of loud music coming from a 2006 Acura MDX that had its stereo on and windows rolled down.
Kilbourne said Shelly came up to the vehicle to see why police had come and was "combative."
"She did not believe the music was loud," said Kilbourne, who noted officers learned she had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a 2018 felony case.
Shelly, according to court records, is accused of biting one officer's right finger, biting another officer's wrist, and kicking two more officers in the groin area during Tuesday's arrest.
Shelly, court records show, also was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer and other felonies after a case in late November 2018. She is accused of spitting in the faces of two officers, kicking a third in the face and biting a firefighter on the arm, records show.
Her bail was initially set at $45,000 for the November case, but a judge reduced that in December 2018 to $2,500, and she posted a 10 percent bond of $250 and was released from jail, records show. A warrant was issued last week after she failed to appear in court.
Kilbourne said neither case against Shelly has been adjudicated, but "it certainly appears she has a pattern of fighting with police."
If convicted of the most severe charge of aggravated battery to a police officer, Shelly faces a sentence ranging from probation to up to seven years in prison in each case.
She is next due in court on Thursday. She is being held at the Kane County jail on $40,750 bail, meaning that she must post $4,075 to be released while the cases are pending.
