Stolen car leads to juveniles in custody in Round Lake Park

An earlier version of this report mistakenly said the arrests were made Thursday.

Two juveniles were taken into custody Wednesday after a car with the keys left in the ignition led to a crime of opportunity in Round Lake Park.

Police Chief George Filenko said a Ford Taurus was reported stolen about 3 a.m. from a home on the 100 block of Forest Glenn Drive. Police a half-hour later were told a resident who had been looking for her 14-year old son saw him with five other people in a car at a gas station at routes 45 and 120 in Grayslake. The parent tried to grab her son, but he fled with the others in a car, police said.

She later saw her son and the others walking on the 500 block of Ravine Drive back in Round Lake Park. The parent called police and the stolen car was found at Hillcrest Terrace and Knollwood Drive, according to police.

Two juveniles were taken into custody, Filenko said, and charges are pending against others.
