Decatur man dies when motorcycle, deer collide on roadway

MACON, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in central Illinois say a Decatur man has died after his motorcycle collided with a deer.

The (Decatur) Herald and Review reports that Macon County Coroner Michael Day said Saturday that 67-year-old George L. Hampsten died Friday on U.S. 51 in Macon, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Decatur.

The coroner says Hampsten was riding north when a deer ran across the roadway, striking the motorcycle. The motorcycle left the road, crossed a ditch and struck a concrete culvert. Hampsten was thrown from the motorcycle into a standing pool of water. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Macon County Sheriff's Office is investigating and an inquest is pending.
