Girls lacrosse: Stevenson runs away from Conant

First a shout out to the birthday girls.

That's right, Stevenson girls lacrosse players Emily Vashavsky and Jamie Fisher share the same birthday.

Conant was the guest on Monday night in Lincolnshire. And on a quick goal from senior Taylor Anderson, the Cougars had a 1-0 lead.

Conant has some talent. As in Katie Schroeder, a senior outside. She went home with 3 goals.

That was the extent of the good news for Conant. Three Stevenson players matched or beat Schroder on this night. That was Sophie Sorenson, (3), Kilian Weber (3) and Erica Spieler (4).

Stevenson (3-6, 3-3 in the state of Illinois), ran off and hid from Conant 15-5.

"We played really well tonight,'' Weber said. "We really stuck together."

Spieler is in her fourth season as a varsity performer at Stevenson. She was looking for an offer to play college lacrosse, but opted to begin pursuing a nursing degree next year at the University of Missouri.

"She's a smart girl,'' Sorenson noted.

"We are much improved team after spring break,'' Spieler said. "We are peaking towards playoffs"

Sorenson starred during volleyball season but lacrosse is still No. 1 in her heart. She will play next year at the University of Connecticut.

"I still like volleyball but lacrosse is my passion." she said.

Sorenson had the Patriots' first goal that evened the score at 1-1. Weber had back-to-back scores and Sorenson's second goal stretched the Patriots' lead to 4-1.

Spieler tallied her first goal and Michelle Shen pushed in a goal. It was 7-2 Stevenson at halftime.

The Patriots took a spring break trip through the Midwest and ran into some tough competition.

"We played high-level teams.'' said Stevenson coach Sarah Gutierrez. "It was very high competition."

The second half belonged to the Pats. Weber had her team's first goal of the second half. Spieler had back-to-back goals as the margin increased to 10-2.

DiSalvo tallied her second goal cutting the Pats' lead to 10-3. Georgia Maskalunas broke into the Stevenson scoring column, making it an 11-3 lead.

Weber scored another goal on a great pass from Sorenson. After DiSalvo put in her third goal, the Cougars received a gorgeous play from a sophomore. Mackenzie Lunkes stormed up field and delivered the final goal of the evening for the Cougars.

Shen tallied the last goal of the night for the winning Patriots.
