Lawyer: Murder case in 2011 disappearance is circumstantial

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A lawyer for a 46-year-old man charged with murder eight years after the disappearance of his 70-year-old mother in northwestern Indiana says the case so far is circumstantial.

Attorney Michael Lambert made the remark Thursday following a hearing where a not guilty plea was entered for Paul Monet Fontaine. He returns to court May 23.

Fontaine was recently extradited from Las Vegas, where he was living. Police earlier described him as a "person of interest" in the disappearance of Dr. Promila Mehta-Paul of Munster.

Mehta-Paul was last seen March 21, 2011, but her body and SUV haven't been found. An affidavit says Fontaine was detained five days later while trying to enter the U.S. from Mexico near San Diego with a backpack containing a license plate from his mother's vehicle.
