Boy dies after van flips in to pond in Huntley

A 10-year-old boy from Addison died Sunday night when a van he was riding in flipped into a retention pond at Route 47 and I-90 in Huntley and police said the crash could have been worse if not for two men who stopped to help.

Illinois State Police said the 2005 beige Chrysler van was headed west on Interstate 90 when it ran off the road on the southbound ramp for Route 47.

Two men who witnessed the crash stopped and helped the driver, a 38-year-old woman from Northlake, and a 10-year-old girl get out of the van after the crash, which was reported at about 6:47 p.m., according to police.

The boy, identified by the McHenry County Coroner's Office as Cameron V. Simmons, was unresponsive when removed.

"They assisted with getting the subjects out of the vehicle. Without that assist, it could have been a lot worse," Illinois State Police Trooper Duane Chapelle said Monday. "They really did a good job."

A doctor at the scene provided CPR to Simmons, and all were taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital. The boy was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m.

Chapelle said the crash remains under investigation and he did not have information on if any citations had been issued in the crash or if the woman and girl were still hospitalized.

An autopsy on Simmons is scheduled for Tuesday, the coroner's office said.
