Terre Haute man pleads guilty to shooting death of teen

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A Terre Haute man has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the shooting death of a high school student during a party.

Nathan Derickson, who was 19 at the time of the shooting of 17-year-old William Garett Sands last March 28, agreed to a plea deal Tuesday that caps his sentence at 10 years. He's due to be sentenced on April 26.

Derickson also admitted to using a firearm in the commission of a felony that resulted in death.

An autopsy showed Sands died from a shot to the head. Officers found the Terre Haute South Vigo High School student dead at a Terre Haute home where minors were drinking alcohol during a party.

Police said Derickson was playing with a gun when it discharged.

Derickson remains on home detention.
