The Daniel Wright Junior High School Academic Science Bowl team has qualified for nationals for eight out of nine years.

On Saturday, Jan. 27, the team placed first in the Middle School Academic competition from the Argonne Region at Oswego East High School. Daniel Wright competed against 20 teams. Daniel Wright will now compete at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., in April.

Science Bowl is a competitive academic club for students who excel and enjoy science. Students compete in a Jeopardy-style format answering math and science questions.

"The National Science Bowl continues to be one of the premier academic competitions across the country and prepares America's students for future successes in some of the world's fastest growing fields in science, technology, and engineering," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry.

The Daniel Wright student competitors are eighth-graders Deepak Salian, Rishabh Wuppalapati and Dev Ganguli; and seventh-graders Vedant Rathi and Akshansh Chauhan. The coaches are Katie Yan and Tony Hafner.

"The team did a phenomenal job at regionals this weekend," Yan said. "Even as the day progressed, our team's communication and teamwork improved. In tough situations, the team kept calm, regrouped, and lifted each other up. I am so proud of this group for their hard work and perseverance."

Daniel Wright Junior High School is a National Blue Ribbon School.
