Lafayette officer accidentally shot by another as dog rushed

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Lafayette Police say an officer is hospitalized in serious but stable condition after accidentally being shot by another officer after a large dog charged them.

Police say the round hit Officer Lane Butler in the back above her protective vest. The other officer's name hasn't been released.

Police Chief Patrick Flannelly says the officers were fleeing an apartment where the dog broke out of its cage when the round discharged.

Lt. Brian Phillips says the "very large and aggressive dog" was seized by animal control personnel.

Police say the officers were investigating a criminal mischief complaint and a person wanted on a warrant at the time.
