Classes to resume after explosion in school maintenance room

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) - Classes at an Indiana school are expected to resume next week following an explosion during winter break in a mechanical room that left two workers hurt.

The Indianapolis Star reports that district Superintendent Michael Beresford said in an email Monday to students and parents that he's optimistic Carmel High School will be ready Jan. 8 for students to return.

Carmel fire officials have said the explosion occurred Wednesday as a gas line to a boiler was being replaced. A school maintenance worker and a contractor were hospitalized. A small fire also started on the roof of the school.

The school district said some students were participating in various practices at the time of the explosion, but none were hurt.

Carmel is just north of Indianapolis.
