Chicago fire crews rescue 15 people from stalled elevator

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago fire crews have rescued 15 people who were trapped inside an elevator that became stuck in a building.

Chief Fire Chief Juan Hernandez says the rescue workers were called to the building late Sunday morning in Chicago's Loop, although it wasn't clear how long the people had been trapped in the inoperable elevator on the building's fourth floor.

Hernandez tells the Chicago Tribune that 10 people were able to leave the elevator through a hatch in its ceiling and meet a waiting firefighter to ascend a ladder within the elevator shaft to safety.

But firefighters had to knock through a wall in order to reach the stalled elevator's remaining five occupants.

All of those rescued were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and refused additional medical attention.
