Illinois town may nearly double mayor's salary

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois community may nearly double the next mayor's salary and also give raises to city council members.

The Pantagraph reports Normal's mayor makes $18,000 annually. The city council on Monday will consider increasing the salary to $32,000 starting May 1, 2021.

Officials say it would be the first increase since 2009 and that it would reflect inflation and increased demands of the job, which has typically been part-time. They say it also would bring the salary closer in line with area communities.

Bloomington's mayor is paid $12,000 annually, while Champaign's mayor makes $35,000.

Normal Mayor Chris Koos declined to comment on whether he plans to seek a fifth term as mayor in 2021.

Council member pay would increase from $4,800 to $6,800, the first hike since 2005.
