Indiana ice storm causes power outages, closes schools

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say an ice storm that hit parts of Indiana created hazardous roads conditions that contributed to one motorist's death, shut down schools, and caused power outages.

Indiana State Police say 60-year-old Rebecca Easton of Goshen was traveling too fast for the slick road conditions Thursday morning when she lost control of her car and it slid off U.S. 31 in Miami County, killing her.

The Indianapolis Public Schools was among dozens of schools districts that canceled or delayed classes because of the storm.

Indiana utilities reported more than 44,000 customers without power as of mid-afternoon Thursday.

The wintry weather comes as a pre-winter storm hit the South and lower Midwest on Wednesday, moving east on Thursday .
