Indiana continues to seek money from ex-school officials

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana attorney general's office is continuing its efforts to get two former Munster school administrators to return money that was allegedly improperly paid.

Deputy Attorney General Frances Barrow has asked the Indiana Court of Appeals to overturn a March ruling by Lake County Circuit Judge Marissa McDermott that found the state waited too long to try to reclaim about $850,000 from former superintendents William Pfister and Richard Sopko.

Barrow argues that the 2017 civil lawsuit against the two former school leaders should head to trial. Lawyers for Pfister and Sopko have until mid-November to respond.

A State Board of Accounts report accused the men of receiving more than $850,000 in overpayments to their annuities, salary and stipend, and other items between 1999 and 2014. They've denied wrongdoing.
